The PA Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP), Radon Division has at least one previously recorded radon test in our area greater than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The PA DEP selects certain areas for increased public awareness and test kit distribution from their guidelines.
Radon is a very serious health concern, causing many lung cancer deaths in the Commonwealth each year. Radon testing is easy and relatively inexpensive; in fact, through a program with the American Lung Association, test kits can be obtained for free while supplies last.
Since it is now “heating season”, this is an ideal time for residents to perform radon testing. As a result of the cooler temperatures homes and other buildings are under closed-building conditions, which is a requirement for radon testing.
To receive your free radon test kit through ALA, go to: www.lungradonkits.org. Begin by selecting Pennsylvania and entering your zip code. Test kits are only available while supplies last. Each kit includes instructions, return postage, laboratory analysis and reporting results.
After you receive your test kit and subsequently test results you can contact the PA DEP, Radon Division in Harrisburg at 800-237-2366 or 717-783-3594 to have any questions answered.
